D.C. shooting: Man killed, 8 others wounded in nation's capital

Written by on July 19, 2020

At least one man was killed, and eight others were wounded Sunday afternoon after three men opened fire on a busy street in Washington D.C., authorities said.

The victims — all adults, and one female — were taken to the hospital following the deadly shooting, which happened just before 5 p.m. at a vibrant neighborhood in the Columbia Heights area. At least one man died and two others were listed in serious condition as of Sunday evening, while the others had non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

“This type of brazen daylight activity in a very, very busy block I’m sure was scary for this community,” Police Chief Peter Newsham said during a news conference at the scene. “They are putting everyone in this community in jeopardy.”

Police are looking for the three men who opened fire on the group of people standing on the street in what Newsham said was likely a targeted attack. Two of the shooters were heavily armed with long guns and one of them had a pistol.

Investigators collected surveillance video from nearby businesses and some of the victims were also known to law enforcement, Newsham said. He added that the incident appeared to stem from a “crew dispute.”

“We’re familiar with some of the players,” Newsham added.

Following the shooting, dozens of evidence markers were seen on the sidewalk next to shell casings and behind yellow crime scene tape. A white plastic chair was also toppled over and a bike could be seen discarded on the sidewalk nearby.

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser stood by Newsham at the scene on Sunday and said investigators were working hard to “bring people to justice.”

“I think it’s shocking,” said Bowser. “Everybody should be outraged that in the daytime when people are frequenting our restaurants, frequenting our businesses, that there could be an attack.”

Police identified the suspects as three Black males, two dressed in all black with black hoodies, and one wearing a grey hoodie. They were last seen in a dark blue or black vehicle with tinted windows going northbound on 14th St NW. They advised residents to be on the lookout and call the police before taking action against the suspects.
